MoE: No Reason to Extend the Admission Campaign

There is no reason to extend the application period for admissions to establishments of higher education until August 5th (sic). A HolosUA correspondent reported that Yaroslav Bolyubash, Director of the Department of Higher Education at the Ministry of Education and Sciences (MoES) of Ukraine made this announcement at a round table entitled Improving the Conditions of Admission to Establishments of Higher Education (HEIs): paths for optimizing student selection models. 

According to Mr. Bolyubash this year’s admission campaign was complicated by an unexpectedly large number of hopeful graduates from rural areas wanting to apply to Kyiv HEIs, poor organization during the acceptance of applications in some HEIs, and extremely hot weather.   

Nonetheless, monitoring of 20 HEIs in various regions of Ukraine and Kyiv showed that as of yesterday the number of applications being submitted is dwindling.  

“To avoid discontent, quash complaints in the press, and remove unnecessary attention from certain HEIs, the Minister [Dmytro Tabachnyk] decided to extend the admission campaign for 5 days and the relevant documents pertaining to this are now being prepared,” he said.    

As was announced earlier, the Minister of Education and Sciences plans on extending the first phase of the admission campaign—submitting applications to HEIs—to August 5, 2010. 

The round table which was attended by National People’s Deputies of Ukraine O. Orobets, Y. Klyuchkovs’kyy, Chancellors of leading HEIs of Ukraine, and international experts was organized by Alliance USETI and the Chancellors Association of HEIs in Ukraine.

On the same day the following announcement was seen on the MoES web site:   Due to the numbers of appeals made by hopeful freshmen and their parents, the Ministry of Education and Sciences of Ukraine has decided to extend the admission campaign for 5 days.  The first phase of the admission campaign—submitting applications to HEIs—is extended through August 5, 2010.
