Ukrainian Delegation Visits the George Washington University

On December 10, 2011 a delegation led by Yevhen Sulima, First Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Youth and Sports which included representatives from the Ministry, the Shevchenko National University, the National Mining University, the Oles’ Honchar National University of Dnipropetrovs’k, the National Technical University Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, the Donetsk National Technical University, the Odesa National Polytechnic University and the V. N. Karazin National University of Kharkiv visited the George Washington University in Washington D. C.
At the University the Ukrainian delegation familiarized themselves with the University’s admission process, its structure, rules of enrollment, what lecturers are responsible for and the general management of the university. The delegation was also shown around well-known sites.
The delegation also met with Kristin C. Williams, Associate Director of the Admissions Department who detailed the undergraduate and post-graduate admission process at American universities and the unique features of George Washington University’s process. She also talked about how external independent testing is conducted in the United States.
During the meeting Mr. Sulima noted: “External independent test scores cannot be absolute. In American universities they add the final secondary grade point average, recommendations from teachers and essays, that is a written work (exam), which is administered by the universities.” Ms. Williams completely agreed with this statement.
The parties also discussed the differences in the American and Ukrainian system of higher education, and possible further cooperation which would allow Ukrainian students to study in leading American Universities.
