The Ukrainian delegation led by Yevhen Sulima, First Deputy Minister [of Education and Science, Youth and Sports] is still in the United States of America.
On December 9, 2011 representatives from the Ministry and from Ukraine’s establishments of higher education (HEIs) had several meetings with the leaders of some of the most influential educational and scientific organizations in the USA.
The delegation met with Allan I. Goodman, President of the Institute of International Education and other representatives of his organization. The Institute of International Education was established in 1919 to promote international academic exchange programs. It is a leader among organizations in the US that run international academic exchange programs for students, post graduates, teachers, researchers, etc, and among those that conduct international training and internship programs such as Fulbright and the Gilman scholarships which are supported by the US Department of State.
The delegation also met with employees and Vice President of American Councils for International Education, David Patton. At this meeting they discussed international academic exchanges, creating business incubators, developing transfer technologies, how to apply cutting edge innovations and commercializing intellectual property.
Mr. Sulima initiated an agreement between the above mentioned American organizations, the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports, and Ukrainian establishments of higher education that will send undergraduates and post-graduates from Ukraine to leading US universities to study through programs that Ukraine started in April 2011.
Mr. Sulima also met with Barbara A. Hill, Director of the Center for Globalization and International Obligations at the American Council on Education. Nearly 1800 executives from US universities (where over 80% of all US students are enrolled) fill the membership roster of the American Council on Education. The discussion with Ms. Hill centered on establishing a relationship between the Ukrainian Chancellors’ Association and the American Council on Education, their cooperation as part of the International Association of Universities, and how to partner Chancellors of Ukrainian HEIs with Presidents of US universities.
When the delegation met with John C. Vaughn, Executive Vice President of the Association of American Universities they discussed cooperation in several spheres including: science, ensuring the quality of education, accrediting establishments of higher education, international post graduate degrees, financing scientific research, study abroad scholarships, and exchanged their opinions on how to resolve pressing educational issues.
