Party of Regions Member, Maksym Luts’kyy Acknowledges that Diplomas from Some Ukrainian Universities are Worthless

Maksym Luts’kyy, Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliamentary Committee on Education and Science is convinced that increasing autonomy for establishments of higher education (HEIs) and increasing the quality of the educational process can only be accomplished by decreasing the number of HEIs. He voiced this opinion when answering a question posed by journalists about the future of private HEIs in light of the new legislation On Higher Education.

UNN quoted the National People’s Deputy as saying: “we have private and state run HEIs whose diplomas are worthless. Our most important mission is to overcome this. We need to decrease the number of HEIs and increase their financial, academic, and social autonomy.”

Mr. Luts’kyy notes that prestigious private universities exist in Europe and the USA. Their graduates are in great demand in the labor market. Some of them really have the highest ratings.

“At those universities students study two or three languages, their classes are taught by leading experts in their fields. I am convinced that Ukraine needs something similar,” said the politician.

Mr. Luts’kyy believes that an HEI’s form of ownership doesn’t have a direct relationship to the quality of the education it provides.

“The new law gives private and state run HEIs the possibility to develop dynamically in order to increase the quality of the education they provide,” he emphasized.

Forum reported that on December 20^th, Mr. Luts’kyy announced that the new draft of the Ukrainian legislation On Higher Education would be registered with the Ukrainian Parliament as soon as possible.
